Abstract: The Motion Pictures Expert Group's MPEG-1 video compression algorithm is one of the most widely used video compression schemes. The purpose of this project is to develop a software based, distributed implementation of that compression method. This software will exploit the algorithm's parallel nature to provide a cost effective alternative to current, hardware based methods. This project will be valuable to those without access to expensive current real-time encoders.
