Critical infrastructure systems, such as electric power grid and water distribution systems, use SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system for varieties of sensing, decision making, and control associated with real-time operation of the infrastructure systems.
Cyber security of SCADA and hence critical infrastructure systems is a timely R&D challenge due to growing concerns for cyber attacks. The ECpE department at ISU has acquired SCADA system with necessary security software/hardware to setup a SCADA-Security Testbed.
The testbed will be used to conduct attack-defense exercises to study the various vulnerabilities of SCADA systems and their potential impacts on the performance and stability of the power system. The basic version of the testbed is already running. The goal of the project is to integrate real-time power system simulation capabilities into the SCADA testbed, and conduct cyber attack-defense evaluations on the integrated system.
